About Kirby School

Kirby is a "gem of a school."

We invite you to come by, introduce yourself, and take a look around. And be prepared to experience an ah-ha moment!

Mission Statement

Through intellectual challenge in a responsive environment, Kirby empowers students to shape their futures with confidence. Our students learn to think critically, develop their creativity, and engage diverse communities with thoughtfulness and respect.

History and General Information

Established in 1994, Georgiana Bruce Kirby Preparatory School is named for a Santa Cruz pioneer who devoted her life to education, freedom, and enfranchisement. In August 2006, the school moved to the Harvey West area of Santa Cruz, across from the Santa Cruz County Office of Education. Kirby's commitment to financial aid, a fundamental part of the school's mission, is designed to support a highly qualified and diverse student body. For the 2016-2017 academic year, for example, 24% of Kirby’s students received financial assistance, totaling $1,137,000. Kirby enrolls approximately 100 students in the middle school and 160 in the high school. The average class size is 12 students.

The school admits students on a competitive basis without regard to race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical disability, national origin or other legally protected status.

Visual and Performing Arts Programs

Kirby visual arts students are highly creative, talented and accomplished, and consistently earn top awards in all categories. Students are encouraged to dream, explore, invent, take risks, and awaken the senses.

The Music Department offers a range of theory and application courses and offers a wide selection of musical performance groups including chorus, chamber choir, treble choir, jazz choir, jazz instrumental ensemble, and orchestra. These groups participate in musical and theatrical performances and in state and national musical competitions. Many Kirby students audition and are selected for the Central Coast Section, Regional, and State Honor Choirs and Orchestras by the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the Music Educators Association (CMEA).

The Kirby Theater Department offers classes for all grades and levels of experience, staging three productions each year, a musical, a straight, and a middle school play. Students are introduced to all aspects of theater and are encouraged to become more deeply involved in the areas that interest them most: acting, directing, writing, technology, set design, costumes, makeup, and more.

In the Dance Department, students explore the interpersonal connectivity of the human experience in world cultures through dance, choreography, and performance. Our dance faculty, professional dancers and choreographers with years of experience touring and teaching nationally and internationally, celebrates each student's unique capacity for innovation and creative expression.

How cool is this?

The Kirby cafeteria serves wholesome, nourishing food, all made from scratch. Our executive chef, Tracy Landry, brings a wealth of experience to the kitchen. Using primarily local, organic ingredients, she crafts restaurant-quality lunches WITHOUT trans-fats, added sugars, or artificial ingredients. Her theme-based menus center around "old favorites" as well as "new opportunities" for students to expand their horizons. Kirby students are encouraged to assist in menu-planning, and they're preferences and opinions are always taken into consideration.

Every day, over sixty percent of our kids choose Tracy's healthy lunch.

And...there's no junk food or soda machines on campus.

And...our cafeteria uses reusable plates, cups, bowls, and utensils, making our lunches and events waste free!
